A few years down the track on Christmas Eve, the Rizzolis are all cosily curled up in the living room by the light of the Christmas tree, their tummies full up with a delicious festive meal (cooked all day by Maura and Angela).
Everyone’s relaxed but too full to speak, and T.J. looks over to Jane…

This made me too sad, so my headcanon warped it into this:

“Maura’s mouth gapes slightly between adoration and surprise and she turns to Jane, who isn’t looking back at her, but meeting a sharp look from Angela instead. Tommy and Frankie just chuckle, and Maura’s stomach sinks as Jane pulls her hand from Maura’s lap.”

She tries to ignore the lump in her throat and the burning in her eyes, but it’s just too much. A few minutes later, Maura makes a hasty excuse to leave. She says she forgot to grab something, and heads out the door before the hives can spread. Jane tries to stop her, but Tommy needs help with TJ, and Maura is able to slip into her Prius and drive off.

She drives around aimlessly for a bit, brushing away the tears on her cheeks. Everything is a blur, and she doesn’t remember cutting the engine, trudging through the snow, or much else besides. She just remembers sitting in front of the tiny tombstone for Maura Doyle, who died when she was born. The dam breaks now, great heaving sobs that wrack her chest and leave her numb in their wake.

Her phone goes off, but cold fingers silence the ringer without looking at the call log. Eventually she looks at her phone - Jane called, but didn’t leave a message for some reason - and her trip has turned into a half hour pity party. Maura slogs back to her car and drives home, forgetting to grab that mysterious something she left for, and arrives empty handed.

When she opens the front door, the house seems to be abandoned, until Angela’s voice rings out. “They all went to put TJ to bed,” she says, and motions for Maura to join her in the kitchen. She hands the younger woman a tissue on the way and motions for her to wipe her cheeks a bit. “Jane will grill you when she gets back downstairs.” She pours Maura a cup of coffee, but sets it down on the counter at the last second and gives Maura a huge hug, which catches Maura by surprise.

“I’m sorry, honey, I didn’t mean to ruin the moment,” Angela says, rubbing her hands along Maura’s back in a motherly embrace. “She’s just so damn stubborn, my Janie, and I just knew she was going to react like that. I wish she’d see what’s in front of her own eyes.”

The crushing loneliness that Maura felt at the graveyard is replaced by cautious hope - Angela knows how she feels, and doesn’t hate her… she’s still there for her. Even if Maura loses Jane, Heaven forbid, she won’t lose the Rizzoli Clan - at least, not easily. This is a Christmas gift that Maura never expected, never knew she needed, but always wanted.

Jane stands in the doorway, unnoticed by her mother and her best friend, and has no idea what to do.
